Annual Meeting Held

gavelThe annual meeting of the Sorrento South Property Owners was conducted on November 18, 2009 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Nokomis. Forty of our 123 properties were represented in person or by proxy, which constituted a quorum.

President Debe Van Pelt delivered a report of Board activities and property information, including Sorrento South home sales, foreclosures, architectural reviews for roof replacements, newsletter publication, and the Association’s participation in community organizations such as the Nokomis Area Civic Association (NACA) and the Sarasota County Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA). Debe also noted that a negotiating team consisting of her, Dr. Eric Lough, and Jim Granger, met twice with a negotiating team from the Sorrento Dock Owners’ Association (SDOA) and that a tentative agreement had been reached regarding management of the marina. The Agreement was sent to the attorneys for final review.

Dock Owners to Meet

timeThe next general meeting of the SDOA membership is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on February 16, 2010, at the Sorrento Clubhouse. This semi-annual meeting will include the election of directors and officers. SSPO Director Joy Mahler will represent the interests of non-dock owners living in Sorrento South.

Thank You, Nancy

You know from reading our newsletter how difficult it is to find people willing to serve on our Board or even on committees. There certainly is no financial incentive, and most owners will tell you that they simply don’t have the time. Or perhaps they have served a two-year Board term in the past and believe that should suffice for a lifetime. So it’s rare, indeed, to find someone who volunteers to serve without being asked, especially when it’s not for the first time.

Nancy Rogers moved to Sorrento South in 1995, served on the Board in the late 1990’s, and returned in November 2003 to serve another three terms. She also was appointed to serve on the SDOA Board to represent the interests of the Sorrento South property owners who do not own a dock in the Marina. When there was work to be done, Nancy was always ready to do it. No job was too small or too difficult. Take, for example, her willingness to find and work with professional electricians to light our new entrance signs, which included boring and running cable under Lychee and Cavallini. Few of us would feel qualified to take on such a project, especially with Sarasota County looking over your shoulder. What Nancy probably didn’t realize then was that she would spend the remainder of her time on the Board as the official replacer of burned-out light bulbs.

A recent study showed that adults age 55 and older who volunteered for two or more groups were 44 percent less likely to die over the five-year study period than those who didn't volunteer.  Other studies have linked volunteering with reduced rates of illness and chronic pain, and increased functional ability.  We know an organization right here in Sorrento South that would like to help you live longer.  Call 966-2057.
